Samuel Brecher (American, 1897-1982) is a modernist painter famous for his style that often reflects solid figures in portraits similar to George Rouault (French, 1871-1958). Brecher graduated from Cooper Union in New York City's East Village back in 1921 and then continued his studies at the National Academy of Design from 1921-1924. From here, he moved to Provincetown Massachusetts to study under the renowned artist Charles Hawthorne (American, 1872-1930). Brecher returned to New York City where he spent the majority of his career working out of his studio located in Chelsea at 124 West 23rd Street. Brecher was represented by several well known New York City galleries in the 1940's and 1950's including the Kraushaar Gallery, the ACA Gallery, the Hudson Walker Gallery and the Merrill Gallery. During his career he won over forty prestigious prizes and awards and had numerous one-man shows.

Brecher's works have been included in many important private and public collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Smithsonian, Newark Museum, and the Walker Art Center. Brecher was also featured in a show at the San Francisco Museum in 1942, where his paintings featuring clowns were included alongside those created by Walter Kuhn, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec and Pablo Picasso.
